Buying guide · Long sleeve football shirts

A long sleeve football shirt changes the outline of a familiar kit. Stripes run further, contrasting sleeves become more prominent and the cuffs add another detail to enjoy. Choosing one takes more than a size label or a favourite player’s name, though. Here is how to compare fit, measurements, condition and shirt type before buying a modern or vintage piece.

The quick answer: decide how you want to wear it, then compare the actual measurements with a shirt you already enjoy wearing. Check sleeve length, shoulder room, cuffs and elbows. Long sleeves alone do not establish a player version, match use or special rarity.

Why choose a long sleeve football shirt?

Appearance is often the main attraction. Stripes, contrasting sleeves and coloured cuffs have more room to shape the design. A white shirt with dark trim gives a different impression from a hooped or striped kit. If you plan to wear it with jeans or under an open jacket, consider the whole garment rather than the badge alone.

Long sleeves also cover more of your arms, which may feel comfortable in cooler weather. They do not automatically make a shirt thermal clothing. Fabric, thickness, cut and other layers all affect warmth. A lightweight match shirt can behave very differently from a heavier training top. For playing football, read the specifications for that particular model.

For a collection, a long sleeve version offers another way to appreciate a familiar season. Enjoy its actual details, and ask what supports a seller’s claim of rarity. The word “rare” is not enough to decide whether the size, condition and provenance are right for you.

Long sleeves, player version or pre-match top?

Sleeve length describes the cut. Official fan shirts can have long sleeves, while player versions may have the same sleeve length alongside other construction differences. Our fan versus player version guide explains what to examine.

A pre-match top is another category. It may carry a club crest and long sleeves without being the home or away shirt used during a match. The Manchester City 2023/24 warm-up top in our collection is described as a warm-up garment. Choose it for its design and stated purpose, with that distinction in mind.

Be careful with player photographs too. A short sleeve shirt worn over a long sleeve base layer may look like one garment from a distance. Examine photographs of the shirt itself, sleeve construction and available references before identifying it as a long sleeve version.

How to find the right size

Start with a shirt whose fit you already like. Lay it flat without stretching it, then measure the width below the armpits, body length and sleeve length. Compare those figures with the shirt you are considering, or ask for measurements before buying. The Maillots Market size guide is a starting point; actual garment measurements remain useful for older pieces.

Four measurements worth checking

  • Pit-to-pit width: a flat width is not a chest circumference. Compare garments measured in the same way.
  • Body length: check where the measurement begins and whether it follows the front or back.
  • Sleeve length: a measurement from the shoulder seam is not directly comparable with one from the collar. For raglan sleeves, ask for clear start and end points.
  • Cuff opening: a ribbed cuff can hold the sleeve in place, but should not feel uncomfortably tight.

For example, a comfortable shirt you own may measure 53 cm pit to pit. Another labelled medium but measuring 49 cm flat will be noticeably narrower through the body. That does not produce an automatic size recommendation: fabric, shoulders and sleeve length still matter. Medium is not a universal fit across brands and seasons.

If you want to wear a base layer underneath, allow room for it and check movement through the arms. Automatically sizing up may solve a width problem while leaving the sleeves too long. Comparing all the measurements gives you a better basis for choosing.

What to inspect on a second-hand long sleeve shirt

Look closely at elbows, forearms, underarms, cuffs and seams. Ask for close-ups if the photographs do not show snags, bobbling, stains or stretched cuff ribbing clearly. Dark fabric benefits from good lighting; white sleeves deserve a careful look around the wrist openings.

An overall rating such as 9/10 does not describe every flaw. Two shirts with the same rating may have very different appeal to you. Comfortable cuffs may matter most if you want regular wear, while a collector might focus on the condition of a sleeve patch. Our second-hand football shirt buying guide adds further checks.

For authenticity, examine the complete garment: labels, references, material, construction and consistency with the model. Long sleeves do not establish match use. Namesets and patches do not prove that a particular player wore that individual shirt either. Any match attribution needs its own evidence for the specific piece.

Three examples from the collection

The Real Madrid 2023/24 long sleeve home shirt combines white with gold and navy details. It is a useful example of how collar and cuff trim contribute to the overall design. The photograph below shows a piece listed in our shop.

The PSG 2022/23 home shirt has a navy base with a white central stripe bordered in red. Its listing identifies a long sleeve Fan / Stadium version, showing how this cut also appears on supporter shirts. The Manchester City warm-up top mentioned earlier offers cream and beige tones with a graphic pattern and a different purpose from a conventional match shirt.

These examples help compare designs and categories. Stock, size and condition depend on the individual garments available. Always read the current product page: inclusion in this guide does not guarantee that a shirt is still for sale in your size.

Wearing and caring for it

For everyday wear, start with a comfortable cut, simple trousers and cuffs that sit well. If you add a jacket, check that it does not pull at the sleeves. A delicate vintage shirt may be better suited to occasional wear than regular training with repeated friction.

When cleaning, follow the garment’s care label first and consider the condition of its transfers. Avoid pulling on the cuffs when putting it on or taking it off. Our guide to washing a football shirt without damaging the printing covers further precautions. Once dry, store it without keeping the printed areas tightly compressed.

The right long sleeve shirt combines a design you enjoy, suitable measurements and clearly described condition. Explore long sleeve football shirts at Maillots Market, then compare each piece’s photographs and details before deciding.
